Unexpected Rescue

The advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.  – Ecclesiastes 7:12

Unexpected rescues make heartwarming news. From the local coffee shop being financially saved by a group of thoughtful customers to stranded motorists being pulled last minute from a deadly ice storm by an alert truck driver, happy endings are particularly joyful when all hope is lost and help arrives at just in time.

Late in Jesus’ earthly ministry, He taught in parables – practical, real-life stories illustrating specific spiritual truths. One day He perplexed the crowd by the recounting of a farmer planting a field. Some of the seed fell on hard ground where the birds snatched it away. Some fell on rocky ground where it sprouted but had no roots to sustain life. Some fell among thorns, quickly overtaken by the strong weeds. And some seed fell on fertile soil where it rooted, producing crops, 100, 60, and 30-fold. Jesus ended that dramatic story by stating, “He who has ears, let him hear” (Matthew 13:9).

God went to painful lengths to save the world from eternal death. It may boggle the mind that humans would shove away that life preserver, but it happens.  As a believer, you are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ but not to force a rescue. God knows when someone is ready to receive Him. Just do your part and trust that life will be saved at the right time, and, yes, maybe in an unexpected way. “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth” (1Coriinthians 3:6).

Pray for faithful believers across America to boldly share their knowledge and understanding. Ask that God will prepare the hearts of public officials and decision-makers with fertile soil ready to receive the Gospel of Christ.

Today’s Verse: Ecclesiastes 7:12

For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money,
and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
