Trust in the Lord

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. – Proverbs 16:20

Trust can be defined as a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Trust is never passive. It requires testing. The word “trust” occurs 188 times in Scripture, and the phrase “Trust in the Lord,” occurs 19 times. Do you suppose God is trying to get His message across?

Trust is what puts faith into action. For some, it is easier to have faith in God. There are even some unbelievers who claim to have faith. But it is a lot harder to exercise trust in Him. You may have heard a chair used as an illustration: You look it over, it seems well put together, strong, maybe even comfortable. You believe that about the chair. But when you sit in it, your faith is evidenced in your trust that the chair will hold you—that it is everything that you believed it to be.

In Proverbs, King Solomon speaks often of trust. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). His father, King David, did the same: “Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name” (Psalm 33:21).  The prophets, likewise, reiterated trusting in God. Isaiah 26:3 promises perfect peace when one trusts in the Lord.

At a time in America when peace of heart and mind is in short supply, believers need to put their faith into trusting action. Pray that the nation’s motto, “In God We Trust,” be activated in the halls of government.

and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
    and makes flesh his strength,
whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 He is like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,
    in an uninhabited salt land.

7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
    whose trust is the Lord.
8 He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
    for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
