Virginia’s results surprise pundits while New Jersey’s count is still ongoing.
Results from the state and local elections held on Tuesday continue to filter in. The former governor of Virginia, who was again running for the position, conceded to his opponent early Wednesday morning. The outcome of the gubernatorial race in New Jersey is still being determined. Some state special primary and city mayoral contest results have surprised pollsters and media commentators.
Senator Dick Durbin said that the results showed that Congress, the president, and the federal government need to renew their effort to do a better job meeting the needs of the American people. “There ought to be a clear message to my party and all those who support it to get the job done,” he said.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell echoed those statements and said, “The results from different parts of our country demonstrate that this was in large part a referendum on national issues.” He advised the president and Congress to ”listen to the voters.”
