BOEM Promotes Offshore Wind Generation Plan

Director of Ocean Energy Management outlines plan to produce 30 gigawatts of power.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced its role in support of President Biden’s goal of providing a new 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by the end of this decade. If met, the president’s goal would be enough to power 22,500,000 homes. Seven new lease sales are to be held by 2025 to accommodate the installation of wind turbines in keeping with the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.

“We are working to facilitate a pipeline of projects that will establish confidence for the offshore wind industry,” said BOEM Director Amanda Lefton. “At the same time, we want to reduce potential conflicts as much as we can while meeting the Administration’s goal to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030. This means we will engage early and often with all stakeholders prior to identifying any new Wind Energy Areas.”
