Be Mindful

Set your minds on things that are above not on things that are on earth. – Colossians 3:2

Be mindful. This popular advice urges you not to dwell in the past or be so far in the future that you miss out on what is truly going on in your life. Weight loss experts say being mindful (slowing down and savoring your food) will actually help you eat less and lose weight. Being mindful is good advice, but how do you do that plus follow Paul’s admonition in today’s verse? “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.”

What does Paul mean? The apostle Paul was a man that lived and breathed the gospel. That was what he was all about, but he didn’t lock himself away and only think about Heaven. He had an active life, rubbing elbows with all kinds of people, having a vast array of experiences, from testifying before leaders to being shipwrecked with common sailors.

Being heavenly-minded, while being some earthly good, is seeking God’s Kingdom first. It is prioritizing your relationship with the triune God. It is caring about people’s lives and eternal souls. It is having the strong hope and conviction that this life is not what matters most while storing treasures in Heaven by helping others. It is praying for God’s will to be done on earth and trusting Him to bring about His purpose and plan in your daily life. As you pray today, intercede for the people of the United States to set their affection on God rather than this material world.

Today’s Verse: Colossians 3:2

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
