“Roll” Your Works to God

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. – Proverbs 16:3

Imagine a giant boulder rolling down a hill. When it comes to a stop, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to move it somewhere else. It is forced to just stay put, where it stopped rolling. Proverbs paints this kind of picture when talking about giving up your work and your plans to God.

Today’s verse says to “commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” The Hebrew word that is interpreted as “commit” in this verse literally means to roll something to another. It carries a sense of finality with it, as you roll something away, you leave it there. God is willing to take the burden of responsibility for the outcome when you “roll” your work and plans to Him.

It is also important to notice the order of things in Hebrew. It is typical to want to commit your plans to God first, before committing your works to Him. But in this verse, Solomon flipped that thought on its head. He said to commit your works to God first, then you can trust that He will guide your plans.

Take time today to sit and just picture yourself packing all of your works and actions into a heavy ball and rolling away to God. Leave them at His feet, and have confidence that He will help align everything else to His purpose. As you pray, take time to lift up the nation’s leaders, as well. Ask God to draw their hearts to Himself, that they, too, would commit their important work to God.

Today’s Verse: Proverbs 16:3

Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
