Turning

Repent, therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. – Acts 3:19-20

Which way are you facing? The logical mind may answer with a point on the compass, while the creative soul may respond in relation to a reference point. But on this day honoring Fathers, many are facing the past. Some may be reclaiming cherished memories while others wish they could undo unfortunate circumstances. In either case, the only thing you may change about the past is your orientation to it!

Repentance in the Bible is a similar concept. It means to turn, go in a different direction, change your orientation. Not moving backward in time, but making a pivot, a spin in the present. Repentance means to turn toward the Lord after being away from Him, acknowledging the reality of your actions or attitudes and how far they are from His righteousness.

Though repentance may sound daunting, those willing to face the Father of all creation make a wonderful discovery. Unlike earthly fathers who have limited resources, your Heavenly Father has provided a completely sufficient and sovereign solution to your sin through His Son. Repentance and forgiveness are eternally linked. The repentant sinner always finds God’s forgiveness and God’s forgiveness always ushers one towards full repentance.

A refreshing new season is possible for both you and the nation, it starts with repentance, turning toward God, and trusting Him for forgiveness and restoration.  Make that turn in your life and pray for decision-makers in America to do the same, bringing health and healing to the land.

20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
