Begin with Yourself

He is not afraid of bad news, his heart is firm, trusting the Lord. – Psalm112:7

“Do you want the good news or the bad news?” It’s a question asked by those who sometimes are trying to make the bad news a little less bad. If you have a firm foundation, trusting God as sovereign and in control, the bad news should not overwhelm you. It may require a change of plans, but your reliance on the Lord will bring you through the trial.

Psalm 112 contains so many words of encouragement. “Blessed is the one who fears the Lord.” Blessed in so many ways… you will find pleasure, an inner happiness, in obeying God’s Word and following His will in your life (v.1). In the midst of adversity, God’s light will provide guidance, mercy, and grace (v.4). The righteous one will have wisdom in managing his affairs (v.5). This wisdom that comes from reverencing the Lord carries through to your dealings with people.

Though it would be easy to get distracted by how this country has drifted away from God, just keep putting Him first. Don’t lose sight of Jesus as Lord and Savior. While bad news may try to divert your attention, God’s Word is the truth and it holds the best news. Pray for revival in the hearts of the people, beginning with yourself. “Turn your eyes upon Jesus/Look full in His wonderful face.” Then stand firm in your faith in God.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 112:7

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
