Step Aside and Trust

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. – Proverbs 3:6

Have you ever had to take a long, winding path somewhere, whether it was in a car on a winding mountain road, or a bicycle on a twisting path, or a hike through the woods? The almost constant twists and turns take its toll on you after a while. Doesn’t it feel as though sometimes life is like that? There can be so many different “twists” and “turns” that it gets overwhelming at times.

Proverbs 3:5-6 in the New International Version says to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” The word trust in this verse literally means to lie face down, helpless. It offers the picture of a servant, ready and waiting to follow the master’s command. This kind of trust is done with your whole heart.

In doing this, you will step aside from your own understanding, to instead follow God’s. When you choose to invite and trust God in every aspect of your life, even the regular and mundane parts, God will straighten out your path. He will help guide you and bring you through anything you face.

As you think about this today, ask God to examine your heart and show you areas where you have not yet trusted Him. Pray that He would help you step aside to let Him lead your life. As you pray, lift up the United States to the Lord. Ask Him to direct the paths of the nation’s leaders, that the country would follow His plan.

Today’s Verse: Proverbs 3:6

In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.

25 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.
Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!
Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
