Following the Leader

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.  – Joshua 1:9

Did you know a famous financial magazine does a yearly survey listing the top most loved and most hated CEOs of America’s major corporations? How would you like to make that most hated list? Not a pleasant thought, is it? Leadership has a price at every level, not just at the top, and sometimes your best intentions or desire to do the right thing are met with misunderstanding and opposition.

In the Old Testament, Joshua was the successor of Moses. Imagine what it must have been like to attempt filling those shoes. Joshua faced an unknown future with the overwhelming task of leading a fledgling nation, only upon faith in God’s word.

The events of the past year have thrown many people and families into previously unimaginable circumstances, leaving some in discouragement. But while the reality of a “new normal” may be distressing, do not forget the good news of the gospel; God never abandons those who follow Him. Joshua had unshakable confidence in God’s care, causing him to challenge those giving in to their fear of the future, “choose this day whom you will serve … but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). Yes, God allows your faith to be tested, but the only thing He requires is for you to choose Him and trust Him.

The best place to start a new season of life is on your knees. As you pray include those leading America—both those you appreciate and those you find challenging—ask that all will find a new trust in God, following His lead, as they guide the nation.

Today’s Verse: Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

And those who know your name put their trust in you,
    for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
    Tell among the peoples his deeds!
12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
    he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 Be gracious to me, O Lord!
    See my affliction from those who hate me,
    O you who lift me up from the gates of death,
14 that I may recount all your praises,
    that in the gates of the daughter of Zion
    I may rejoice in your salvation.
