Count the Cost

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost? – Luke 14:28

Have you ever watched a home renovation show on television? The homeowners usually set out all the parameters for the designers, including their budget. As demolition starts, it almost always happens that unexpected problems come up, leading the homeowners to scramble to figure out how to handle the extra expenses they hadn’t planned for.

Doesn’t it feel as though this is how life goes sometimes? There are always unexpected costs that pop up in life – whether they are monetary or otherwise. In Luke 14, Jesus talks about how there is even a cost for following Him. He actually invited people to stop and consider what it will cost them to follow Him, to make sure they are truly ready to be His disciples. On the other side, there is also a cost to not following Jesus. Each person must weigh the costs on both sides to decide what they are willing to pay.

Do you know what you are willing to pay to follow Jesus? Do you know what it would cost you not to follow Jesus? Ask God today to show you how to truly follow Him. Pray that He would give you the strength to endure whatever cost you may face. As you think about the United States, pray that God would open up the eyes of the nation to how costly it is to turn away from Him. Ask that God would keep America’s eyes and of the governing officials focused on the path that He has laid out.

Today’s Verse: Luke 14:28

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
