Hear and Obey

My eyes have seen your salvation that you prepared in the presence of all peoples. – Luke 2:30-31

Simeon spent his life anticipating Christ’s arrival as the Lord had promised. When Simeon was a young man, the Lord said that he would see the Jewish Messiah before he died. Simeon, whose name in Hebrew means “one who hears and obeys,” exemplified that through his days often spent praying in the temple in Jerusalem. Then one day Joseph and Mary came into the temple to present Jesus as the firstborn to God and for the purification of Mary.

When Simeon saw the baby Jesus, he recognized Him as the Messiah. Then he made a prophetic statement about Him regarding the purpose of His life. Simeon picked Him up in his arms and said, “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32).

Simeon’s words revealed that salvation and truth would be available for the entire world, not just the Jews. Jesus would bring glory to Israel. Simeon continued with a warning that there would be opposition to Jesus in the future and that His suffering would cause personal pain to Mary.

The Lord’s life, death, and resurrection provide the only way to eternal life for all who place their faith in His salvation. Trust in God’s Word and rejoice in what Christ has done for you. Commit to be “one who hears and obeys” His Word. Pray that your local and national leaders place their faith in the Messiah and live in anticipation of His return.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
