Trey Trainor, Chairman, Federal Election Commission

Trey Trainor

Federal Election Commission

James Edwin “Trey” Trainor III was born in Texas. He earned an undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and received his Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan University. He engaged in the private practice of law, focusing on election law, campaign finance and ethics.

He served as counsel for the presidential campaign of Texas Governor Rick Perry in 2012 and was general counsel to the 2016 Republican National Convention platform committee. He was appointed assistant general counsel to the Texas Republican Party and also was general counsel to the Texas Secretary of State. He served as special assistant to Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

Trainor was nominated by President Donald Trump to be a member on the Federal Election Commission for a term expiring April 30, 2023. After invoking cloture on his nomination, he was confirmed by the Senate in May 2020. A month later, he was elected as chair of the FEC for the remainder of 2020.

In the News…

Restoring trust in America’s democratic process and more are concerns for Trey Trainor, the chairman of the Federal Election Commission, when confronted with ongoing allegations of voter fraud.

After lawyers held a press conference last week in which it was alleged there was a “massive influence of communist money through Venezuela, Cuba and likely China in the interference with our elections here in the United States,” Chairman Trainor said, “I think it’s very crucial that they present the evidence.” He added, “I think it’s crucial that they present the evidence to a court—not necessarily to the media.”

“It is deeply concerning that those accusations have been made,” he said. “One of the things I find most fascinating about it is when the claims of Russia collusion were made against the Trump campaign, we spent about three years investigating it. When the claims are made on the other side by Republicans that interference has taken place in our election, it’s been immediately dismissed by most of the media.”
