Keep Running

Hebrews 12:1-2 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Two-time Olympic runner Frank Shorter is quoted as saying, “Experience has taught me how important it is to just keep going, focusing on running fast and relaxed. Eventually pain passes and the flow returns. It’s part of racing.” As someone who won a gold medal for running a marathon at the Olympics, Mr. Shorter is certainly an expert on running a race.

The Bible often compares the Christian life to a long-distance marathon. Like a race, there are times you must push through the pain and difficult situations you will face. All you need to do is keep your eyes focused on Jesus. The pain and difficulty won’t last forever. Eventually, the pain will pass, your flow will return, and your endurance will grow stronger.

Pray With Us

God, there are times that I feel like I can’t keep going. Today, I feel like it would be so easy to just give up. You set the example for what endurance truly looks like, through Your work on the cross. Help me to follow Your example and to keep my eyes focused on You, no matter what pain may come my way. God, I can’t wait until the day that I finish the race and win the prize You have waiting for me. Thank You for the strength you continually give to me.

Amen.
