For Whom the Bell Tolls

Freedom should not be taken for granted.

Leviticus 25:10 – Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”

An exact replica of one of America’s most iconic monuments is on display at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. just blocks from the National Mall – It is the Liberty Bell. Etched on the bell are the words of today’s verse from Leviticus.

When the museum opened in 2017, the six-foot tall, 3,200-pound bill was installed as its first exhibit item.  The verse refers to the Year of Jubilee, when slaves were to be set free in accordance with Hebrew tradition, and lands were to be returned to their original owners.  Jubilee years continue to play an important historical role in the life of modern-day Israel.  In his book The Oracle, Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn explains the modern and prophetic mysteries of the 50-year intervals.

In an article in Time magazine, Dr. Ben Carson wrote, “The Liberty Bell proclaims who America truly is, even when she seems to be finding her way.” Abraham Lincoln in his Second Inaugural Address as the Civil War was drawing to its end, said, “With malice toward none and charity for all, with fairness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in…to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace.”

Remember the urging of the Apostle Paul who said in Galatians 5:1, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore.”  Stand up, speak up, be discerning under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and use your freedom to vote.

Heavenly Father, Your word proclaims our freedom in Christ, yet too often I find myself either taking advantage of that freedom or, worse, taking it for granted.  So much of America is living in darkness and despair, Lord—so many who don’t know You and the grace You offer. Help me to truly hear their cries of desperation, and establish in me a stronger heart for their hope and healing. Help me to live with the expectation of greater things from You and the people of Your Kingdom.
