Finding Rest

Just let go!

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Are you exhausted? A wise counselor once said, when we face trouble after trouble and we’re feeling overwhelmed, just breathe. Take a deep breath, hold it for a second or two, and then exhale slowly and with deliberate control. Rest for a moment, then repeat it. Emotionally, this little exercise helps to ease anxieties and worries and the stresses of life. It is also scientifically beneficial, as a deep exhale releases carbons, the toxins that have accumulated in your lungs and bloodstream. But then you must inhale.

In Confessions by St. Augustine of Hippo, he writes, “Our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” Restlessness could be another way of describing the anxieties of today—you feel like you need to do something, anything, to just “get things moving” in a positive direction.

Jesus has compassion on the restless and anxious soul. He understands that one of your needs if rest. Ponder today’s verse for a minute or two. Let some silence sink into your space as you let Jesus’ words sink into your breath. Exhale the stress, inhale His goodness. Come to Him, and rest awhile there.

Pray With Us

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for your invitation to come to You, that You are the source of rest.  Let me see that time spent with you is a sanctuary of rest and release from the things that are so bothersome to me today. Refresh me with Your Holy Spirit, and re-energize me in the spiritual direction You want me to go. I love You, Lord,

Amen.
