No Matter What

So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. – 1 Corinthians 2:5

Most American children have at one time or another played some version of Follow the Leader: when all the children line up behind one person who leads them around in circles, past trees, or in antics the others must mimic. Maybe in high school, you danced the Bunny Hop, or later at a wedding took part in a conga line. One way or the other, one person has charge of the group, and everyone else falls in line.

Today, there are others who want you to accept what they tell you, follow their directions, and jump when they say jump, without asking “how high?” They come at you with enticing words, or what the Apostle Paul called “lofty speech.” They may be fine orators, but their message is tainted with untruths. Just consider the mob rule in recent days of rioting where individuals involved would tell you they are right.

Divine wisdom does not need to be adorned with highfalutin jargon, organized communication skills, or violent threats. No. Rather it comes from knowing and loving God, understanding His power and authority, and submitting yourself to His plans for you. No matter what, it is God alone whom you need to follow, staying in step with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Pray that the leaders of the House and Senate would rely less on their own self-sufficient wisdom, but instead seek to know the wisdom that comes as a result of having the indwelling Spirit of the Living God and following Him.

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:5

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—

10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
