In Times of Danger

 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  – Psalm 56:3

It’s hard to imagine the warrior king David—the man who killed a lion and a bear and fought off Israel’s enemies—afraid. If anyone had reason to fear for his life, it was David. There was a period of time that the king before him actually threw a javelin at him. He spent years on the run, as the king’s enemy. This man who experienced real grave threats said, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” David was delivered from his enemies and survived into old age.

Humans face real threats daily, whether it be a virus, an accident, or an enemy. All people live in vulnerable, mortal bodies and know that one day time will run out. In this life, the best anyone can hope for is to make it into old age like David. The wisest man who lived said, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).  Jesus said the two greatest commands are to love God and love others.

When you are afraid, turn to the Lord. This is a frightening time for the United States. Cast your cares on Your Heavenly Father. Romans 8:38-39 offers these comforting words, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, not things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Pray for those in authority to entrust their lives and their responsibilities to God.

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
