Shelley Wellons Moore Capito was born in November 1953 in Glen Dale, West Virginia. She earned an undergraduate degree in zoology from Duke University, and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia Curry School of Education.
She began her political career as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates where she served two terms. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where she served fourteen years before being elected to the United States Senate, assuming her seat there in January 2015. At one point, Capito was considered a possible contender for vice president on the ticket with Donald Trump.
She is married to Charles L. Capito and they have three children. She has been a distance runner for over 30 years. She is a Presbyterian.
“Time is always a problem,” Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said, referring to passing the tax reform plan. “The more time that goes, the more nitpicking and the more likelihood that one member or another may find a certain thing they don’t like.”
She said that she was also “disappointed” in her fellow West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin’s not coming around to support the bill. Manchin is among the more moderate Democrats and known to try and find compromise between the partisans.
She is still hopeful that the joint committee of House and Senate members will find a bill they can finalize and send to President Trump’s desk before Christmas.
