Defense Secretary Nomination Hearing Tuesday
Looking for quick confirmation
Next Tuesday, the Senate Armed Services Committee plans to hold confirmation hearings on Mark Esper’s nomination to be Defense Secretary.
Committee Chairman Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma said the hearing is contingent on receiving Esper’s paperwork from the White House by Monday.
“We need Senate-confirmed leadership at the Pentagon, and quickly,” Inhofe said in a statement. “While we will act expeditiously to consider acting secretary Esper’s expected nomination, the committee will uphold our constitutional advice-and-consent responsibilities with the care and consideration this position deserves.”
An aide for Inhofe said the committee has received some of the paperwork but not the official nomination forms.
Senators are eager to get a permanent defense secretary confirmed as the department has been without a confirmed leader since former Secretary James Mattis announced his resignation last December.
