Acting FDA Head Named
Dr. Norman Sharpless appointed Acting Commissioner
This week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Dr. Norman Sharpless, director of the National Cancer Institute, would be President Trump’s pick for Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dr. Sharpless has had a long career as an academic, serving as the director of the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center prior to his role as the director of the National Cancer Institute.
HHS Secretary Alex M. Azar said of the appointment, “Dr. Sharpless’s deep scientific background and expertise will make him a strong leader for FDA. There will be no let up in the agency’s focus, from ongoing efforts on drug approvals and combating the opioid crisis to modernizing food safety and addressing the rapid rise in youth use of e-cigarettes.”
- For Dr. Sharpless to be used by God in his role to bring greater consumer protections to the American People.
- For Secretary Azar to be given wisdom as he leads the Department of HHS.
- For President Trump to have wisdom as to who best to appoint into the FDA role permanently.
