Supreme Court Hears Final Case of the Week

Major case has freedom of religion versus anti-discrimination.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the final case of the week, Fulton v. City of Philadelphia. The case primarily deals with legal protections for individuals with an LGBTQ identity versus freedom of religious conscience. Over the last five years, the Supreme Court has determined that the Constitution provides protections for employees and of same-sex marriage. This case will balance religious beliefs when they conflict with the government’s protection of these rights.

The specifics of this case deals with Catholic Social Services (CSS), a foster care agency that partners with the city of Philadelphia to find homes for orphaned children. The plaintiff in the case, Sharonell Fulton has been a foster mother for over 25 years working with CSS. The agency explicitly states that it doesn’t approve same-sex couples for placement. Philadelphia condemned that position and demanded that it not discriminate against same-sex couples moving forward. Mrs. Fulton argues this is an infringement on her freedom of religion.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For God to give the Justices of the Court wisdom on the best way to rule on this case.
  • That God would give the Court wisdom on the best cases to hear in the future.
  • For the result of this case to bring about the best homes for orphaned children.
