President Declares National Emergency
President vows to protect U.S. southern border
On Friday, President Trump officially declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border. The President expressed that there exists a serious threat to national security saying, “We’re going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border and we’re going to do it one way or the other. It’s an invasion. We have an invasion of drugs and criminals coming into our country.”
This declaration will allow the president to divert $3.6 billion of Department of Defense funding towards the construction of a border wall. An additional $2.5 billion is expected to be used from counternarcotic programs, and $600 million from the Treasury Department’s asset forfeiture fund. Combined with the $1.3 billion authorized by Congress for fencing, the president will have $8 billion for construction of the wall.
- For President Trump to have wisdom on how best to utilize federal funding to protect the country.
- For the Department of Defense to work with the President to make the correct funding available.
- For Congress to work with the Executive on working through this challenge to the U.S. balance of power.
