President Moving Ahead on State of the Union
Despite pressure from Speaker for postponement
January 29 is the date that has been set for the State of the Union address that President Trump will deliver to members of the U.S. Congress
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recommended that the president delay his address, citing concerns about security for the event with some personnel furloughed during the government shutdown. The Secretary of Homeland Security assured the president and the speaker that there were no security reasons for delaying the speech.
Some in Congress have suggested that President Trump relocate the speech from the floor of the House of Representatives to the Senate, or even to deliver it by video or in a live address from the White House.
The White House says it is forging ahead with plans for President Trump to deliver the address at the Capitol next week.
