Gina Haspel to Head CIA
CIA Director Mike Pompeo has been tapped as President Trump’s new Secretary of State. He will be the first CIA director to head the State Department. He faces Senate confirmation hearings as he takes over the position ahead of the president’s planned upcoming meeting with the North Korean leader. He is replacing Rex Tillerson, a former Exxon Mobil CEO.
“I have gotten to know Mike very well over the past 14 months and I am confident that he is the right person for the job at this critical juncture,” President Trump said. “He will continue our program of restoring America’s standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
President Trump’s selection to take over at the CIA, Gina Haspel, is a seasoned spymaster, who has avoided the limelight during a 32-year career that has included time running overseas “black sites” where she was station chief. She must also be confirmed by the Senate before she takes command of the CIA. She will be the first woman to head the intelligence agency.
