Mark Warner

U.S. Senator from Virginia

Mark Robert Warner was born in December 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned an undergraduate degree in political science from George Washington University and received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. While at George Washington University, he worked on Capitol Hill to pay for his tuition, including for U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff. He co-founded a cellular technology company.

Warner served four years as the Governor of Virginia. During that time, he was also chairman of the National Governors Association. He has been a member of the United States Senate since January 2009.

He is married to Lisa Collis, and they have three daughters. He is a Presbyterian.

In the News…

Senator Mark Warner, together with his fellow Senator from Virginia Tim Kaine, is calling for a federal investigation into Liberty University after recent claims that the university mishandled sexual assault investigations, allegedly violating federal Title IX laws.

He released a statement saying he applauds the bravery of the students who have come forward. He also said:

“Recent reports only underscore the need for federal policymakers to improve transparency, consistency, and accountability at our institutions of higher learning. In the meantime, the leadership of Liberty University must act expeditiously to prioritize the needs of survivors, comply with federal law by notifying survivors of their option to contact law enforcement, and ensure a campus culture that supports and defends every student’s basic right to a safe environment. While Liberty should act immediately to remedy the issues alleged in the report, it would also be appropriate for the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education to look into Liberty’s procedures for dealing with sexual assault cases.”

Liberty University is facing multiple lawsuits that allege institutional misconduct. One was filed in July by 12 anonymous women claiming the university silenced and sometimes punished women who reported their assaults or rapes. Since then, 10 more women have come forward.
