In an address at the Pentagon on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence described the Trump Administration’s plan for a Space Force as “an idea whose time has come.”
“The next generation of Americans to confront the emerging threats in the boundless expanse of space will be wearing the uniform of the United States of America,” he said. He added that Congress must act quickly to establish and fund the new military department.
The vice president outlined an aggressive plan that by 2020 the sixth branch of the military would be created. A Space Force will be better able to confront emerging security threats, he said.
Everything from GPS satellites to missile launch-and-track sensors would be within the purview of the critical space-based military capabilities of the U.S.
When introducing the vice president, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said, “it is becoming a contested war fighting domain and we have to adapt to that reality.”
For Congress as they look into and debate the establishment of the Space Force.
