President Trump issued pardons on Tuesday for Oregon cattle ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond. In a statement about the pardons, the White House said, “The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West.”
The Hammonds were convicted in 2012 on arson charges. They had set fires on their lands that had spread onto federal lands. These charges also sparked protests that included the actions of Ammon Bundy who broke into the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016 and occupied it for 41 days to protest the way the U.S. government manages federal lands. The Hammonds are expected to be released within 24 hours.
