In a surprising turn of events, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed a desire to meet with President Trump and reportedly stated that he is committed to denuclearization. President Trump accepted the offer in what sets the stage for an unprecedented meeting between the two leaders.
The invitation was delivered by South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, after a meeting between his delegation and North Korean leaders in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un has offered to put his nuclear program on the negotiating table. In response, the White House released a statement which read, “[President Trump] will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined. We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain."
Talks are expected to take place by the month of May.
