President Trump’s administration has announced its plan to address soaring drug prices. The topic has been a major concern of the administration, with the goal being drug innovation and lower prices for the public. The White House has released its plan of attack over the past few days: the Biopharmaceutical Pricing Reform and budget proposal. The pricing reform states “Preserving this [U.S. Biopharmaceutical] industry and encouraging it to innovate while making drugs more available and affordable for all Americans is an attainable goal.”
Both policies are designed to make medication more affordable to American citizens. The proposals include a max out-of-pocket spending on medication for individuals enrolled in Medicare’s prescription program. Another piece includes deterring providers from prescribing more expensive medications by removing incentives through Medicare. Other parts of the proposed legislation include how prescriptions are paid for between insurers and patients. These proposals remain to be seen by Congress.
